Extra Care
West and Machell is at the forefront of extra care design, each project is viewed as unique, delivering design solutions that address specific requirements of the site. We have completed projects across the length and breadth of the country; down to Milton Keynes, across to Staffordshire and up to Newcastle. In the past we have been invited guests of housing associations on study trips to Holland and Scandinavia to research their innovative approaches to both the design and construction of European extra care housing. Following the success of Whitebeck Court extra care, the conversion of a 16-storey tower block in Manchester, we are sharing our experience of the innovative approach to bringing these legacy buildings back into use by giving a series of ‘High Rise Lunches’ in Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and London. Our extra care schemes have received many accolades; Whittons Mill received a national award from The Mail on Sunday and Architects Journal for ‘Best Retirement Development.’
Social Housing
As 75 percent of our work is residential, Registered Providers being our main clients, we have gained extensive knowledge of designing to standards, such as, HCA Design Quality Standards, Housing Quality Indicators, Lifetime Homes, Building for Life and Secured by Design, to name a few! We have staff in-house who are accredited Code for Sustainable Homes and SAP assessors. So when it comes to sustainable housing design, we are able to ensure that fundamental issues that have low or no impact on cost, such as layout and orientation, are considered at the design stage, as opposed to bolting on expensive solutions at the end of the project in a desperate attempt to obtain the required points. This has enabled us to achieve higher levels of Code at an affordable price for our Clients. In 2008 we were named ‘Best Residential Architects’ at the Yorkshire Residential Property Awards.
Private Housing
West and Machell have completed a wide range of private housing projects, which includes, multi-storey city centre luxury apartments, mixed use developments, student accommodation blocks, refurbishment of redundant existing and listed buildings and one off houses. These projects have used various modern methods of construction such as, timber, steel and concrete frame, Structherm concrete panel systems and prefabricated bathroom pods on the student accommodation where there was sufficient efficiency of scale for MMC to be viable. We are also setting the standard of sustainable development with Greenhouse, which involved the part refurbishment and part new build of a redundant art-deco hostel in South Leeds to provide a collection of distinctive homes and offices powered by sustainable energy. The project has won over 30 awards including the RIBA White Rose Awards 2010 Sustainability Award and the Leeds Architecture Altered Building Award 2011.
Health Care
Our experience in Healthcare began with mental health provision with Becklin Centre at St James’ Hospital in Leeds and Airedale Centre for Mental Health in Keighley. We then completed a number of Health Centres and community hospitals that champion the new thinking of holistic healthcare by offering a range of services under one roof, such as Westbourne Green and Hillside Bridge Health Centres in Bradford and most recently Hartlepool One Life Centre and Minor Injuries unit. Procurement routes have been through PFI, LIFT, Procure 21 or direct funding. Due to the complex nature of these projects, online construction collaboration software, such as 4projects and BuildOnline, were utilised for document control, communication control and process automation. The schemes also utilised the Achieving Excellence Design Evaluation Toolkit, AEDET Evolution, to set design standards at the beginning of the project and measure the design quality of the completed project.
West and Machell have a varied experience of commercial projects, which includes, office buildings, bar fit outs, visitor centres and industrial units. We have a pragmatic approach to design treating costs as a design tool, without this the design process can run away with itself. We understand our client’s expectations, we exceed them wildly, but we are able to deliver them.
West and Machell have worked on a number of regeneration projects that transform failing city rim inter war estates. The projects range from single estates to major PFI regeneration projects where we are part of a consortium working closely with a wide range of collaborators. We have earned an enviable reputation in involving local stakeholders and communities in a participative process to develop innovative design solutions appropriate to their location. We feel that the people best placed, (and the most forthright,) to steer design development at the early stage are the local residents. This ensures that places and buildings are better tailored to need and so are well-used and engender a sense of ownership and so are well-loved. Our ability to communicate our ideas with clients, the public and fellow consultants is greatly enhanced by the use of 3D computer modelling and visualisation, which is produced in-house as a design aid at all stages.

WEST + MACHELL is a medium size Leeds based architectural practice, which works throughout the country, with a commitment to design, delivery and listening to our clients. Formed 21 years ago, we successfully focus on four major areas of design and delivery, as listed below, and have received a variety of architectural awards reflecting our ability in these fields:
EXTRA CARE, SOCIAL HOUSING & PRIVATE RESIDENTIAL: in particular housing for people at risk such as the elderly.
HEALTH CARE: with a special focus on the emerging importance of conglomerate service groups for clinical and mental care.
COMMERCIAL: focusing on multi service provision within major towns and cities.
REGENERATION: West + Machell transform failing inner city areas.
75% of our work is residential, Housing Associations being our main clients. By focusing on a limited number of areas we have been able to build our expertise and so can input at all design stages to create a successful project. Working with both Public and Private Partners, current projects range from placemaking for a housing PFI through to the preparation of proposals for renewing a failing district centre for a local authority and a major retailer. These projects involve both a community led approach to the planning and design issues and a longer term strategic and economic overview. Our range of clients reflects our varied portfolio; from over 20 housing associations, local authorities through to national developers our approach has to embrace the varied expectations and operational styles of these often disparate organisations.
